Qatar’s mediation efforts between the United States and Iran are continuing in an attempt to prevent tensions in the region from spiralling out of control, Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said, Al Jazeera TV reported on Saturday.

Al-Thani said the US administration remained willing to pursue a solution even after the midterm elections, signalling that Washington’s interest in reaching an agreement with Tehran had not changed.

Significant progress had been made and Al-Thani expressed confidence that a settlement could be reached.
"We cannot wait to reach a perfect agreement; we hope to reach a good agreement," he said.

Since September, Iran has been putting forward its own seven-day proposal, which US President Donald Trump has so far rejected. The plan calls on Washington to lift its blockade of Iranian ports, unfreeze Iranian assets and approve an Iran-backed route through the Strait of Hormuz. In return, the disputed waterway would be reopened.
