US President Donald Trump.
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing the US federal government to use the term “Super Intelligence” (SI) instead of “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) in relevant government operations and communications.
The move was announced on Tuesday, 29 September, as part of a broader White House initiative focused on the use of advanced technology across the federal government. The White House has also begun using the term “Super Intelligence” in its official material.
Under the new terminology, US government agencies will refer to the technology as “Super Intelligence” rather than “Artificial Intelligence” where the executive order applies.
The order comes as the Trump administration seeks to expand the use of advanced technology in government services. The White House said its new America.gov platform would use Super Intelligence to help provide information and services to the public.
The change does not constitute a global or scientific renaming of artificial intelligence. Rather, it establishes terminology for use by the US federal government. The term “artificial intelligence” continues to be widely used in legislation, scientific research, technology companies and international institutions.
The move came alongside a meeting between Trump and leading technology executives, during which the president also unveiled a voluntary agreement concerning the development and safety of advanced AI systems.
The terminology change has attracted attention because “artificial intelligence” remains the established name for the field internationally, while “superintelligence” traditionally refers to a hypothetical or advanced form of intelligence that surpasses human capabilities in significant areas.
