Iraq’s Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi told the Iraqi parliament that the government had three options for addressing the country’s salary and financial situation: compulsory salary savings or deductions, borrowing, or delaying salary payments.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s press office, al-Zaidi said the first option would have involved compulsory salary savings, leaving employees waiting for promises regarding their payments. The second option was to pay salaries once every 45 days.

The third option, he said, was borrowing, which would have further increased Iraq’s debt burden, particularly as the country is already facing significant accumulated debts.

The remarks came as the Iraqi Parliament decided to host the Minister of Finance and the Governor of the Central Bank to discuss the government’s decision to amend the dollar exchange rate.
