The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, has said the EU is actively working to de-escalate rising tensions between the United States and Iran.
In remarks to Al Arabiya/Al Hadath on Thursday, Kallas stressed that there is a firm European belief that a diplomatic solution with Iran is ultimately necessary. She noted that such an outcome would help remove the risks posed by ongoing threats and contribute to regional stability.
Kallas also confirmed plans to hold a bilateral meeting with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, adding that the EU remains in constant contact with regional partners to explore ways of supporting ongoing diplomatic efforts.
She further indicated that Pakistan and Egypt are also engaged in discussions, while acknowledging the complexity of the situation due to the sharply differing positions of the two sides.
The EU’s top diplomat emphasised that a negotiated settlement remains the only viable path forward — one that could strengthen regional security, ensure more sustainable peace, and reduce threats, including those affecting Israel, while bringing an end to the current cycle of conflict.
Iranian response to US proposal
Her comments come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, fuelled by an exchange of threats and recent developments on the ground, as international and regional actors intensify efforts to prevent a wider confrontation.
According to an informed Iranian source, Tehran has submitted its official response to a 15-point US proposal through intermediaries. The source, cited by Tasnim News Agency, said Iran is now awaiting a reply from the American side.
The response was reportedly delivered on Wednesday evening. The source also claimed that Washington may be seeking to buy time in preparation for a potential ground incursion into southern Iran.
Meanwhile, a senior Iranian official stated earlier this week that Tehran had rejected the US proposal, outlining five conditions for ending the conflict. These include compensation for Iran, guarantees to prevent a recurrence of war, a halt to fighting on all fronts involving all parties, and recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
