Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.
The Imrali Committee of Türkiye’s Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Parti) has issued an official statement relaying remarks from imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan following the committee’s first meeting, established under the “Law on Strengthening Community Unity and National Support”.
According to the statement reviewed by PUKMEDIA, Öcalan said that the “strong will” demonstrated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli, together with their calls for an end to armed struggle, had received historic backing from various political parties. He said these developments ultimately led to the adoption of the law establishing the committee.
Öcalan noted that the committee had held its first meeting under the new legislation, describing it as a sign of continued progress in the process.
He warned, however, that the current stage remained “extremely sensitive”, with efforts being made to obstruct and provoke the process as part of what he described as a systematic campaign against it. He stressed that all opinions, names, documents and observations circulating in his name were “baseless”.
Öcalan reaffirmed his commitment to working towards social peace and strengthening the values of brotherhood, while calling on all sides to act responsibly and with awareness to help overcome what he described as a historic juncture.
