Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani described the agricultural gene bank in Sulaymaniyah as one of the most important national projects in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, saying it will help protect plant species in Kurdistan and the wider region from extinction.
Talabani said in a social media post after the inauguration of the first agricultural gene bank in Sulaymaniyah: "The agricultural gene bank is one of the most important national projects in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. In addition to helping protect plant species in Kurdistan and the wider region from extinction, the facility will support the development of a new generation of agricultural products and create hundreds of job opportunities."
“I was pleased to open this important national project in Sulaymaniyah today,” Talabani said, expressing his gratitude to the European Union, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and stakeholders from both the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government for their support.
In the presence of Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, Sulaymaniyah’s first agricultural gene bank on Sunday.
Funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the European Union, the strategic project has been established on an area of 100 dunams.
The gene bank will serve as a leading scientific centre dedicated to collecting, preserving, and studying the seeds and plant diversity of Iraq. Its mission is to maintain the authenticity of native plant species, support their development, advance scientific research, and foster collaboration between academic institutions, research bodies, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources.
