Latif Nerweyi, Head of the Media Board of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and a member of its Leadership Council, has said that President Bafel Jalal Talabani’s continued visits to Baghdad reflect his national responsibility to promote consensus and unity among Iraq’s senior political leaders.

Nerweyi said the efforts were aimed at addressing political and security tensions, safeguarding the interests of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and navigating the sensitive regional circumstances.

Commenting on President Bafel’s recent meetings in Baghdad, Nerweyi said that whenever a major political or security crisis emerges, or relations between the Kurdistan Region and Baghdad become strained, the PUK President travels to Baghdad to help address the situation.

“He understands the delicate nature of the situation in the region and considers resolving these issues part of his duty,” Nerweyi said.

He added that during his latest visit, President Bafel held a series of meetings with senior Iraqi leaders as part of his national responsibility, seeking to strengthen consensus and unity and reach an understanding on how to overcome existing challenges and address developments in the region.

Nerweyi also recalled President Bafel’s efforts at the outset of the US-Iran conflict, when he travelled to Baghdad and met with leaders of several Iraqi political factions. He said those meetings helped build consensus around the need for Iraq to maintain neutrality in the interests of both the country and the Kurdistan Region.

“Today, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region are once again going through a sensitive phase,” Nerweyi said, describing the situation as one of neither war nor peace. He pointed to continued economic pressure and tensions between the United States and Iran, as well as the rapidly changing regional landscape.

Against this backdrop, Nerweyi said President Bafel had intensified his efforts to help navigate the situation in a manner that serves the interests of all parties.

President Bafel arrived in Baghdad on 18 August 2026 and held meetings with Nizar Amedi, President of Iraq; Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, Head of the Reconstruction Coalition; Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim, Head of the National Wisdom Movement; Hadi al-Amiri, Head of the Fatah Coalition; and Rayan al-Kildani, Secretary-General of the Babylon Movement.

At Mam Jalal’s residence in Baghdad, President Bafel also received Mohammed Samaan Agha, Governor of Kirkuk.

During his meetings with the President of Iraq and senior political leaders, discussions focused on the overall situation in Iraq and the wider region. The meetings also stressed the importance of continued dialogue among national political parties to address challenges, maintain security and stability, and ensure a dignified life for the citizens.
