Iraqi President Meets Iranian Parliament Speaker in Baghdad

Iraqi President welcomes Iranian Speaker to al-Salam Palace.
Iraqi President Nizar Amedi received Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly, and his accompanying delegation at al-Salam Palace on Wednesday, 19 August 2026.
The meeting covered the latest regional and international developments, as well as prospects for strengthening bilateral relations in ways that serve the shared interests of both countries and contribute to the wider good of the region.
President Amedi reaffirmed Iraq’s firm support for efforts to end conflicts and resolve the crises affecting the region. He stressed the need for constructive dialogue and diplomatic channels to address outstanding issues and lay the foundations for lasting security, development and stability.
He also said Iraq supports measures aimed at promoting regional peace and safeguarding the sovereignty and independence of states. The President emphasised the importance of pursuing wise and peaceful solutions to disputes, protecting national security and sovereignty, preventing further escalation and avoiding the use of force, given its serious consequences for regional security and peace.
For his part, Ghalibaf expressed Iran’s appreciation for the deep-rooted historical ties between the two neighbouring countries and their peoples. He stressed Tehran’s commitment to coordination and joint cooperation with Iraq across various fields.
