Iraq’s Ministry of Oil said the Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) project at the Basra Refinery will increase domestic high-octane petrol production by around 4 to 5 million litres, while adding approximately 10 million litres of gas oil.

Ministry spokesman Salim al-Rikabi told the Iraq's state media (INA) that the ministry is working to expand and develop refining projects, particularly those focused on producing refined petroleum products, to meet domestic demand and reduce reliance on imports, especially for petrol and gas oil.

Al-Rikabi said the FCC project at the Basra Refinery, completed by Japanese company JGC, is a strategic undertaking. He noted that JGC had resumed work on the project after operations were suspended due to the regional situation.

On oil transportation and exports, al-Rikabi said Iraq had turned to alternative and supplementary routes, including the Iraq-Türkiye pipeline and routes through Syria and Jordan. However, he noted that the Syrian pipeline cannot currently be used because of its deteriorated condition.

He added that Iraq has also resorted to tanker transport, with plans focused on moving fuel oil (heavy oil) and naphtha to ensure the continued operation of refineries. The transportation capacity is expected to reach up to 35,000 cubic metres of fuel oil and 100,000 cubic metres of naphtha.
