Germany Revokes Residencies of Over 20% of Syrian Refugees in First Half of 2026

Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) said it had revoked or refused to extend residence rights for 23.2% of Syrian refugees whose cases were reviewed during the first six months of 2026.

The figures were released by the German government in response to a parliamentary inquiry by the socialist Left Party, highlighting significant changes in Germany’s asylum policy towards Syrian nationals.

According to the data, the number of Syrians facing the revocation of their residence rights has increased as German authorities expand their reviews of asylum and protection cases.

BAMF initially focused its reviews on individuals convicted of crimes or considered a threat to public safety. However, the latest figures indicate that the scope of the assessments has since been broadened, with 23.2% of the cases reviewed resulting in the cancellation of residence rights.

The developments come as the situation for Syrian refugees in Europe continues to evolve following the fall of the Ba’ath regime in late 2024. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians who had sought refuge in neighbouring countries, including Türkiye, Lebanon and Jordan, have since considered or begun returning to Syria.
