A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck western Colombia on Monday, sending strong tremors across parts of the country and neighbouring Ecuador.

The epicenter was in San Jose Del Palmar, a municipality in the Choco region about 250 miles (400 kilometers) west of Colombia’s capital, Bogota, the U.S. Geological Survey and Colombia’s counterpart reported, according to the Associated Press. The USGS said it struck at a depth of 66 miles (107 kilometers).

Choco Gov. Nubia Córdoba said in a post on social media that in the regional capital, “there are injuries and serious damage to buildings,” without providing further details.

The latest earthquake comes after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela in late June. The twin earthquakes destroyed hundreds of buildings and claimed the lives of more than 5,000 people.

At least two people were killed in a powerful earthquake in western Colombia on Monday, which downed buildings and left people trapped in the rubble, authorities ‌said, according to Reuters.

Two people were killed in the town of Manizales, Mayor Jorge Eduardo Rojas said in an interview with Blu Radio, while Alejandro Eder, mayor of Cali, one of Colombia's largest cities, said preliminary reports showed at least 20 structures had collapsed there, with people trapped.
