Israel launched a series of retaliatory strikes in southern Lebanon.

Israeli forces launched strikes in southern Lebanon after two Israeli soldiers were killed and four others wounded in an explosion during a military operation, escalating tensions as US-mediated talks between Israel and Lebanon continued in Rome.

The incident marked the first reported Israeli military deaths in southern Lebanon since a fragile ceasefire with Hezbollah took effect in June. According to the Israeli military, the soldiers were killed during an operation in the area of Majdal Zoun, where troops were conducting a security mission.

In response, Israel carried out air strikes in southern Lebanon. Lebanese health authorities said the strikes killed one person and injured 12 others in the town of Tebnine, while additional strikes and shelling were reported in other areas, including Burj al-Shemali, Mansouri and Majdal Zoun.

The Israeli military accused Hezbollah of violating the ceasefire agreement, although the group has not claimed responsibility for the incident. Israeli officials later signalled a desire to avoid further escalation, with Defence Minister Israel Katz refraining from directly assigning blame while the situation remained under review.

Violence Overshadows Rome Talks

The escalation came as Israeli and Lebanese officials were engaged in US-backed negotiations in Rome aimed at implementing a framework agreement designed to reduce tensions along the border and establish longer-term security arrangements.

The talks have focused on measures including the expansion of pilot zones in southern Lebanon, the deployment of the Lebanese Army, security coordination and steps towards a broader agreement. Earlier discussions in Rome produced progress on implementing arrangements linked to the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from certain areas and restoring greater state control in southern Lebanon.

However, the latest violence has complicated diplomatic efforts, with officials seeking to prevent renewed confrontation along the border. The United States has been supporting the negotiations as part of wider efforts to maintain the ceasefire and prevent further instability.

Fragile Ceasefire Faces New Test

The Israel-Lebanon border has remained tense despite the ceasefire, with both sides accusing each other of violations. The agreement was intended to reduce hostilities, strengthen the role of Lebanese state institutions in the south and create conditions for a more permanent security arrangement.

Lebanese officials have continued to call for stability and the restoration of full state authority across the country, while Israel has stressed that security concerns must be addressed before any further withdrawal measures are implemented.

International observers have warned that renewed military activity could undermine diplomatic progress and risk a wider escalation. The latest developments place further pressure on negotiators in Rome as they attempt to preserve the fragile truce and advance discussions on border security.
