Iraqi President Urges Inclusion of Women in Top Cabinet Roles

Iraqi President Nizar Amedi has urged political blocs within the ruling State Administration Coalition to ensure female representation as vacant ministerial portfolios are filled, proposing that a woman be appointed Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, or head of a dedicated Ministry for Women's Affairs outside standard party allocations.

Addressing the 18th Islamic Day Conference to Combat Violence against Women, President Amedi praised Iraqi women for their steadfastness over recent decades. He noted that women across the nation have consistently demonstrated an exceptional capacity to protect lives, maintain family cohesion, and weather successive crises—standing resilient against dictatorship, war, economic sanctions, poverty, and the scourge of crime and terrorism.

Highlighting the gravity of rapidly shifting regional security and military developments, the President warned that their fallout poses a direct threat to the economic stability and security of neighbouring states. He emphasised that lasting regional peace is impossible without a stable and secure Iraq.

President Amedi called on all state institutions and political factions to uphold national stability, safeguard sovereignty, and advance Iraq’s interests to support broader peace efforts both regionally and globally.

He reaffirmed that the Presidency remains steadfast in supporting legal and governmental measures to root out corruption, hold corrupt actors to account, and recover misappropriated public funds, while simultaneously strengthening Iraq’s independence and security.

In closing, the President reiterated his call for the ruling coalition to prioritise women's representation as the cabinet formation is finalised, offering his explicit backing for a woman to assume the role of Vice President or Deputy Prime Minister, or to lead a newly established women’s affairs ministry free from traditional quota constraints.
