Andy Burnham, the New PM of UK.
Andy Burnham has formally become the United Kingdom's Prime Minister after being appointed by King Charles III, promising to "rewire Britain" through a programme of political and economic reform aimed at tackling the cost-of-living crisis, improving public services and devolving more power from Westminster to the country's regions.
Burnham, 56, succeeds Keir Starmer, who stepped down after a decline in public and party support. The leadership transition makes Burnham Britain's seventh prime minister in a decade, underlining a prolonged period of political instability.
After accepting the King's invitation to form a government, Burnham pledged to reshape the way Britain is governed, arguing that national priorities should be driven by the concerns of communities rather than by central government alone.
The former Mayor of Greater Manchester, widely known as the "King of the North" for his advocacy of regional devolution, said his administration would focus on easing pressure on households facing high living costs while improving the performance of public services.
Burnham has repeatedly argued that power and investment should be distributed more evenly across the United Kingdom, saying regional authorities should have greater control over transport, housing, economic development and public services.
His government is expected to prioritise economic growth while maintaining fiscal discipline, although key decisions on taxation, public spending and energy policy are likely to attract close scrutiny in the coming weeks.
Among the immediate challenges facing the new prime minister are sluggish economic growth, pressure on public finances and concerns over the performance of major utility companies. Reports suggest the government is considering stronger public oversight of struggling water providers, including the possibility of placing Thames Water under special measures.
Burnham has also indicated that constitutional reform and greater devolution will be central to his programme, seeking to reduce regional inequalities and stimulate investment outside London and the South East.
Attention is now turning to the formation of his Cabinet, with senior ministerial appointments expected to shape the direction of the new administration's domestic and economic agenda.
Burnham's appointment follows his unopposed election as leader of the governing Labour Parsitioning him to lead the government without a general election. The next UK general election is scheduled to take place by 2029, although the prime minister retains the power to call an earlier vote.
