The criminal Ajaj Ahmed Hardan.
The Iraqi High Criminal Court announced on Thursday that the Federal Court of Cassation has upheld the death sentence by hanging imposed on the convicted offender Ajaj Ahmed Hardan al-Tikriti, following his conviction for genocide, crimes against humanity, rape, and the murder of detainees linked to the Anfal campaign.
Court president Judge Saad al-Lami told the Iraqi News Agency that the Federal Court of Cassation had affirmed the ruling issued against Ajaj Ahmed Hardan al-Tikriti after he was found guilty of genocide against victims of the Anfal campaign. He said the convict was responsible for acts of genocide against unarmed Kurdish civilians who survived the Anfal campaign and were held at Nuqrat al-Salman prison.
Al-Lami added that the defendant committed grave abuses against detainees at the Nuqrat al-Salman detention facility, including starvation, deprivation of water, and torture leading to death, as well as the rape of several women. He said these crimes formed the basis of the conviction.
He further noted that the case will now be referred to the Presidency for review and the issuance of a presidential decree to ratify the sentence.
It is worth noting that the Iraqi High Criminal Court issued the death sentence by hanging against Ajaj Ahmed Hardan al-Tikriti on 14 May. The ruling was subsequently upheld by the Federal Court of Cassation, making it final under Iraqi legal procedures.
