Iraqi Security Forces Launch Anti-Corruption Operation in Baghdad's Green Zone

Iraqi counter-terrorism forces carried out a security operation in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone on Saturday, arresting a number of officials on corruption-related charges, according to Iraqi media reports.

A judicial source told Iraq's state media (INA) that a number of individuals accused in corruption cases have been arrested on the basis of confessions made by former Oil Minister Undersecretary Adnan al-Jumaili during judicial proceedings.

According to the source, al-Jumaili's testimony implicated several individuals, including members of the Iraqi parliament, prompting the issuance of judicial arrest warrants against those named in the investigation.

The source added that Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi has reaffirmed his determination to pursue those accused of corruption and misappropriating public funds, stressing that the government will continue efforts to hold accountable anyone found to have violated the law.

Security forces reportedly entered the Green Zone under orders from Prime Minister al-Zaidi and sealed off the area, which houses Iraq's Parliament, government institutions and the residences of senior officials.

According to reports, more than eight individuals, including members of the Iraqi parliament, were arrested on the basis of judicial warrants issued in connection with alleged financial and administrative corruption cases.

The reports also said that more than eight political figures were detained during the operation. The names circulating in local media include Mohammed al-Karbouli, Abbas al-Sudani, Karim al-Sudani, Alia Nassif, Hassan al-Janabi and Muthanna al-Samarrai.
