Russia-Ukraine War Resumes Following End of Three-Day Ceasefire

Military operations between Russia and Ukraine resumed after a temporary three-day ceasefire expired, with both sides reporting renewed attacks and continued clashes across several areas.

Ukrainian authorities said air defence systems were activated overnight following reports of drone and missile activity targeting multiple regions, including areas surrounding the capital, Kyiv. Local officials stated that emergency services and air defence units responded to the incidents, while assessments of damage and casualties were ongoing.

Russian authorities also reported attacks in border regions and accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out strikes during and after the ceasefire period. Moscow said security measures had been intensified in several areas amid continuing military tensions.

The ceasefire, announced earlier by Russia during commemorations marking the anniversary of the Second World War victory celebrations, lasted for three days. The pause in fighting had raised cautious hopes of reducing tensions and creating momentum for wider diplomatic discussions. However, throughout the truce, both Russia and Ukraine exchanged accusations of violating the agreement, with reports indicating that hostilities continued in some frontline areas.

Diplomatic contacts involving international parties remain ongoing, with several countries continuing efforts to encourage dialogue and prevent further escalation. Discussions surrounding a broader settlement and future security arrangements have continued despite the renewed fighting.

Recent comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which he suggested the conflict could eventually move towards an end, attracted significant international attention. Ukrainian officials, however, have continued to stress that any lasting resolution would require concrete agreements and guarantees.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to carry major humanitarian, political and economic consequences, affecting regional stability, global energy markets and international trade.
