Russia-Ukraine talks in Geneva.
Two days of highly anticipated peace negotiations between representatives of Ukraine and Russia, brokered by the United States, concluded on Wednesday with no major breakthrough, officials from both sides have confirmed.
The discussions, held in the Swiss city as the war approaches its fourth anniversary, were described as “difficult” and “business-like” by participants, underscoring the deep divisions that remain over key issues such as territorial control and the future of occupied regions.
Stalemate on Core IssuesUkrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that while some groundwork had been laid, the talks failed to resolve the most contentious political hurdles. He accused Moscow of seeking to prolong the negotiations without making meaningful concessions, especially over territory seized since the invasion began.
Both Kyiv and Moscow remain entrenched on core disagreements:
•Territorial status: Russia continues to insist on recognition of control over land it occupies, a demand Ukraine rejects.
•Security guarantees: Ukraine has insisted on strong Western security assurances but has been reluctant to make territorial concessions.
The talks reportedly included discussions about political and military tracks, including potential mechanisms for future ceasefire monitoring, although details remain sparse.
Russia’s chief negotiator described the proceedings as “difficult but businesslike,” signalling that while diplomacy continues, substantive agreement is still out of reach. The Ukrainian delegation echoed that sentiment, acknowledging the intensive nature of the discussions but stressing the lack of a definitive deal.
Mixed Statements from Delegations
Despite the lack of a breakthrough, both sides indicated that further negotiations are planned, though no firm dates have been set.
Conflict Continues Amid DiplomacyThe lack of progress in Geneva comes against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities, with fighting still raging in eastern Ukraine and the humanitarian cost of the conflict growing. The talks’ outcome highlights the challenges facing international diplomacy as efforts to end Europe’s deadliest conflict since the Second World War persist.
