The Swedish Social Democratic Party’s foreign policy spokesperson, Morgan Johansson, has called for an immediate end to violence against the Kurdish people in Syria, expressing deep concern over the country’s rapidly deteriorating security situation.
In an official statement, Johansson condemned attacks carried out by forces under the control of the Syrian government against Kurdish communities and Kurdish-majority areas. He called for a comprehensive ceasefire, the return of all parties to the negotiating table, and the resumption of political dialogue on Syria’s future.
The Social Democrats strongly condemned all human rights violations, urging accountability for those responsible, independent investigations into crimes committed, and the prosecution of those involved.
The statement noted that Kurdish forces, in cooperation with the Global Coalition, have played a pivotal role and made significant sacrifices that contributed decisively to the defeat of terrorist organisations. It stressed that this places a particular responsibility on coalition countries to take serious and immediate action to halt the current attacks against Kurdish communities.
The party also emphasised the need to guarantee both collective and individual rights for all ethnic and religious groups in Syria, underlining that any transitional phase following the rule of Bashar al-Assad must be inclusive and leave no group marginalised.
Warning of broader risks, the statement pointed to repeated massacres targeting Druze and Alawite communities as evidence of the scale of the existing dangers. It noted that elements within the current power structure in Damascus are linked to extremist Islamist movements previously designated as terrorist organisations, making the need for democratic guarantees, minority protection, and international monitoring increasingly urgent.
The Social Democrats called on the Swedish government to use all available diplomatic channels to prevent a new humanitarian catastrophe in Syria, stressing that any Swedish aid or political engagement with Damascus must be conditional on clear commitments to democracy, respect for human rights, and the protection of minorities.
