Rebwar Taha, Kirkuk Governor.
Rebwar Taha, the Governor of Kirkuk and Leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) list in the province for Iraqi parliamentary elections, affirmed that he will remain in Kirkuk, pledging to continue serving all citizens of the province without discrimination.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday evening, Taha said: “My brothers and sisters in Kirkuk, thank you all — both those who voted for us and those who did not. Thank you for your trust and this responsibility, which strengthens our commitment to continue serving our people without discrimination. Our goal is to provide better services and ensure genuine coexistence among all communities in Kirkuk.”
He added that, through the collective efforts of the PUK cadres and other communities, the party secured first place and a major victory in Kirkuk.
“Our votes in these elections increased by over one million compared to the 2021 parliamentary elections, and by more than 30,000 compared to the 2023 provincial council elections,” Taha stated.
The governor emphasised that he will remain in Kirkuk to continue serving its citizens, noting: “Thanks to the efforts of all, we have achieved a level of balance and coexistence in Kirkuk — but there is still more to be done.”
Taha expressed his appreciation to the security forces for maintaining stability throughout the election period and highlighted that the results of the national elections would not affect the functioning of the local administration.
“What matters is that we continue reviewing our performance and serve the people better,” he said.
According to Taha, the PUK has increased its parliamentary seats in Kirkuk from three to four, while the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) lost one seat.
“These results show that citizens reject the KDP’s antagonism towards the Kirkuk administration,” he said, urging all Kurdish parties to unite in serving the province.
Rebwar Taha also stressed that his mission in leading the PUK list was to send a strong team to Baghdad to defend the rights of all Kirkuk residents, regardless of ethnicity or background. He expressed confidence that all representatives from the province would work sincerely for the benefit of its people.
Preliminary results show that the PUK list in Kirkuk came first with more than 178,000 votes, winning four seats. Rebwar Taha received 96,000 votes, making him the top-voted candidate across Iraq.
