North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a major military parade in Pyongyang showcasing the country’s newest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Hwasong-20, state media KCNA reported on Saturday, 11 October 2025.
The parade, held late on Friday, marked the 80th anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party and followed a series of celebratory events earlier in the week.
Among the international guests attending were Chinese Premier Li Qiang, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev leading a delegation from Moscow, and Vietnam’s Communist Party General Secretary To Lam.
During the parade, nuclear-armed North Korea unveiled what KCNA described as its “strongest nuclear strategic weapon system” — the Hwasong-20 ICBM. The missile is said to enhance Pyongyang’s long-range strike capability, theoretically allowing it to reach any point on the U.S. mainland. However, analysts note continued uncertainty over the system’s guidance precision and the re-entry durability of its warhead.
In his address at the event, the North Korean leader expressed “warm encouragement” for North Korean troops deployed abroad, stating that the military’s heroism “will not only be seen in the defence of the homeland but also in outposts of socialist construction.”
“Our army should continue to grow into an invincible entity that destroys all threats,” he declared.
Earlier on Friday, Kim held talks with Medvedev, who praised the contributions of North Korean soldiers reportedly fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, calling it a symbol of the “trust” underpinning relations between Pyongyang and Moscow.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to deepening cooperation with Russia, highlighting the importance of continued exchanges to advance shared strategic objectives, according to KCNA.
