Iraqi PM Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani announced on Saturday that the Iraqi federal government has held talks to reactivate the Iraqi–Syrian oil export line, as part of broader efforts to diversify Iraq’s export routes and strengthen its energy sector.
Speaking at the Baghdad International Energy Forum, attended by representatives of international energy companies and experts, PM Sudani stressed the government’s commitment to ending the burning of associated gas and fully utilising Iraq’s production of 1.3 billion standard cubic feet.
“We have many hopes and expectations for such forums, as they provide opportunities for dialogue, the exchange of views, awareness of technological developments, and the preparation of vital studies and recommendations,” the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting Iraq’s central role in global energy markets, he recalled: “We must not forget that OPEC was founded in Baghdad in 1960, and Iraq remains a major member. Our proven reserves stand at 150 billion barrels, enough to sustain exports for over 120 years at minimum estimates. Yet, our export share is still not proportional to our reserves, productive capacity or population.”
PM Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s openness to international investment in the oil and gas sector, stating that the government is pursuing multiple strategies to maximise energy wealth, including expanding refining capacity, inaugurating the Karbala refinery, modernising existing refineries, and launching six new investment opportunities in the refining sector in partnership with the private sector.
The Prime Minister underlined a strategic objective to shift Iraq’s exports away from crude oil and towards high-value derivatives: “Our aim is to ensure that at least 40% of total production is converted into refined derivatives by 2030. Work has already begun on several major projects in this direction.”
On export routes, PM Sudani confirmed: “Talks were held weeks ago to reactivate the Iraqi–Syrian export line, providing an additional option to diversify our export ports and enhance flexibility in crude transport. At the same time, we have already commenced construction of the Basra–Haditha pipeline, extending 685 kilometres, which will contribute to this strategy.”
