Sulaymaniyah Polytechnic University Leads Effort to Align Education with Labour Market Needs

Sulaymaniyah Polytechnic University has announced its participation in a major project aimed at enhancing the employability of young people and disadvantaged groups across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Professor Hoshyar Abdullah Aziz, President of the University, and Professor Awder Mohammed Ahmed, Director of the Office of International Relations, took part in the first meeting of the Steering Committee for the initiative, “Green and Digital TVET for Enhancing Employability in Iraq.”
This EU-funded project is implemented by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in close collaboration with the Iraqi Ministries of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Education, and Labour and Social Affairs, and with the support of the Higher Committee for Education Development in Iraq of the Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister’s Advisory Commission, and the Ministry of Planning.
The meeting brought together senior stakeholders, including the European Union Representative and Head of the UNESCO Office in Iraq, the Undersecretary of the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Presidents of Polytechnic Universities from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as representatives of the relevant ministries.
During the session, Sulaymaniyah Polytechnic University presented its perspective on the project’s implementation and future direction. In his address, Professor Hoshyar Abdullah Aziz underlined the key areas necessary for the initiative’s success, stressing the importance of modernisation and innovation in higher education.
The project focuses on several core objectives:
-Modernising curricula to meet contemporary needs.
-Enhancing teacher training and capacity-building.
-Developing new academic and vocational programmes aligned with the principles of Green Education and Digitalisation.
-Strengthening partnerships with industry to ensure education is aligned with labour market requirements.
-Engaging civil society organisations (CSOs) and placing youth at the heart of the process.
This initiative represents a significant step towards equipping the next generation with the skills required for a sustainable and digital future, while also fostering inclusivity and equal opportunities for disadvantaged groups.
