The United States President, Donald Trump, and European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, have reached a major agreement to impose a 15 per cent tariff on the majority of EU exports to the US, effectively averting a looming trade war.
The deal, signed at Trump’s golf resort in Scotland, replaces previously threatened tariffs of up to 30 per cent and covers most European Union goods, excluding certain key sectors. As part of the agreement, the EU committed to investing $600 billion in the United States and pledged to purchase $750 billion worth of American energy, defence equipment, and semiconductors.
According to Reuters, US President Trump described the deal as “the biggest ever,” claiming it surpassed his earlier trade agreement with Japan. Von der Leyen characterised it as the most stabilising outcome achievable under the circumstances.
Despite the breakthrough, the 50 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium imposed under Trump’s previous executive order remain in effect. However, discussions are ongoing regarding the possible replacement of these tariffs with import quotas. Several sectors — including aerospace components, certain chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products — are exempt from the new 15 per cent tariff.
Analysts have described the agreement as a diplomatic success that reduces transatlantic trade tensions, although concerns persist about the uneven impact of the deal on European exporters and potential cost increases for American consumers.
