The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has honoured its commitments to serve the diverse communities of Kirkuk through the provincial governor and council members by implementing several vital service projects across the city. Among the most significant achievements are the renovation works on the Kirkuk-Qarahanjir and Kirkuk-Pirde (Altun Kupri) roads.
Parwin Fatih, a member of the Kirkuk provincial council, told PUKMEDIA that these road renovation projects and other services are part of the programme of the “Kirkuk is Our Strength and Will Coalition,” -The PUK and the Kurdistan Communist Party's Coalition during the Iraqi provincial council elections in Kirkuk.”
"Since the formation of the local government and the PUK’s assumption of the governorship, these promises have been actively realised," she added.
Fatih explained: “The maintenance and renewal of the Kirkuk-Qarahanjir and Kirkuk-Pirde roads will benefit residents not only in Kirkuk but also in Sulaymaniyah and Baghdad. The projects will create employment opportunities for Kirkuk’s youth, improve road safety for drivers and passengers, and enhance the city’s overall appearance.”
She further emphasised that the local government, now nearly ten months in office with the PUK holding the governorship, is committed to delivering a wide range of services in neighborhoods of all communities without discrimination. These include greening initiatives, street cleaning, and further road repairs both within and beyond Kirkuk city.
In the last Iraqi provincial council elections in disputed territories, the PUK secured a strong mandate, winning 157,639 votes—43% of the provincial total—and securing five seats on the Kirkuk provincial council.
This progress reflects the PUK’s ongoing dedication to improving infrastructure and public services in Kirkuk, reinforcing its role as a key political actor in the region.
The disputed areas, often referred to as the “in-between areas,” encompass Kirkuk, Sinjar, Tal Afar, Khanaqin, and others. These regions are characterised by ethnically and religiously diverse populations—including Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrians, and Chaldeans.
