The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Interior issued a statement on Saturday, 5 July 2025, in response to recent remarks by the spokesperson for Iraq’s Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, reaffirming that ensuring the country’s security is a joint responsibility shared between the Iraqi federal government and the KRG.
The statement stressed that, “regardless of the prevailing political climate or the differing views of political parties, safeguarding the lives of citizens, upholding the country’s sovereignty, and maintaining national stability must remain the foremost priority for the official institutions of both the federal government and the KRG.”
The Ministry voiced frustration over the lack of accountability in the face of repeated security breaches in the Kurdistan Region.
“In recent years, the Region has been targeted by dozens of drone and missile attacks. Although the origin and direction of these attacks were known, and multiple joint committees were established with the federal government to investigate, no findings have been made public. More importantly, no individuals or entities have been held accountable, despite the presence of clear evidence and a high level of coordination between both sides,” the statement said.
Last Friday, the KRG Ministry of Interior issued a statement denying media reports that a drone strike had targeted alleged “Israeli bases” in Erbil. The Ministry blamed the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) for executing the drone attack on Erbil. The drone crashed in a desert area near Erbil without causing any casualties.
Responding on Saturday, Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, condemned the KRG’s accusation. “The accusation made by the KRG Ministry of Interior against an official Iraqi security institution is unacceptable, strongly condemned, and entirely unjustifiable—especially as it was made without supporting evidence. We urge the Ministry to submit any available evidence to the appropriate government authorities,” he said.
Several cities of the Kurdistan Region, including Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, have been subjected to a series of missile and drone attacks in recent days. While these incidents have caused varying levels of material damage, no casualties have been reported. The origins of the projectiles and the identities of those responsible remain unknown.
