Erbil International Airport
The first flight from Erbil International Airport is set to depart today, Tuesday, 24 June 2025, following a 12-day suspension prompted by security concerns in the surrounding region.
In a brief statement, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Department of Media and Information announced: “The first flight from Erbil International Airport departed at 3:00 PM today, 24 June 2025.”
Dilan Rashad, spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Transport and Communications, stated yesterday, Monday, that “since the closure of Iraqi airspace on 13 June due to the conflict between Israel and Iran, a total of 1,283 flights have been cancelled at Sulaymaniyah and Erbil International Airports.”
He added: “1,184 return flights were cancelled at Erbil International Airport, while 99 were cancelled at Sulaymaniyah International Airport.”
Earlier today, the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority announced the reopening of Iraqi airspace to air traffic, following a thorough assessment of the security situation and coordination with relevant national and international bodies. Owing to the war between Iran and Israel, the federal government had declared the full closure of Iraqi airspace and airports, with the exception of limited flights from Basra International Airport to repatriate stranded Iraqi nationals and facilitate the return of foreign nationals to their respective countries.
