SVR Chief, Sergei Naryshkin.
Russia’s top intelligence official has warned that the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel have reached a “critical” stage, as the country continues to call for restraint and a return to diplomacy.
According to TASS, Sergei Naryshkin, Chief of the Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), stated that Moscow remains in direct contact with its intelligence counterparts in both Tehran and Tel Aviv. He described the current situation as “highly dangerous” and cautioned that any further escalation could lead to “irreversible consequences” across the Middle East.
The warning comes alongside remarks from Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who strongly advised the United States against providing direct military support to Israel. He argued that such involvement would “severely destabilise” the region and damage any prospects for a peaceful resolution.
Russia has openly criticised Israel’s recent strikes on Iranian targets, branding them a breach of international law. At the same time, Moscow has acknowledged Iran’s right to defend itself, while urging both sides to avoid actions that could lead to a full-scale war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also held a recent phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during which both leaders emphasised the need for an immediate ceasefire and renewed efforts toward a political solution.
With tensions mounting, Russia is attempting to position itself as a key diplomatic player in the crisis, aiming to prevent further regional instability.
