In a special interview with Radio Monte Carlo, the First Lady of the Republic of Iraq, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, reflected on a range of issues—from international engagement and women’s rights to environmental challenges, humanitarian advocacy, and national identity.
The First Lady spoke about her recent participation in the cultural programme of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference in France, where she met with Brigitte Macron and a number of first ladies from across the globe. She described these meetings as important avenues for dialogue and cultural exchange, which help reinforce Iraq’s cultural and humanitarian presence on the international stage.
She highlighted the serious environmental issues Iraq is currently grappling with, including prolonged drought, declining water levels, and the widespread effects of climate change. Ms Shanaz emphasised Iraq’s active involvement in global environmental policy, particularly in its leadership role as Chair of the Group of 77 and China.
On the humanitarian front, she recalled her personal journey as a refugee and activist outside Iraq and spoke about founding the Kurdistan Save the Children organisation. She reiterated her enduring commitment to defending the rights of children, women, and other vulnerable populations, shaped by her lived experiences.
Discussing the present condition of Iraqi women, the First Lady addressed both social and legislative challenges with frankness. She underscored the importance of preserving the progress achieved over decades, and called for continued efforts to empower women in both public life and legal frameworks—particularly in response to controversial proposed amendments to the Personal Status Law.
Concluding the interview, Ms Shanaz expressed heartfelt sorrow over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, drawing poignant comparisons with Iraq’s own past suffering, including the Anfal massacres. “We here in Iraq are healing from our wounds,” she said, “and we deeply understand Gaza’s pain.” She urged the international community to take sincere humanitarian action and called on Arab women to play a leading role in breaking the silence and amplifying the voices of victims in the face of injustice.
