US President, Donald Trump.
The President of the United States Donald Trump has signed a sweeping executive order barring entry to citizens of 12 countries, citing national security concerns. The ban will take effect on 9 June, and affects both tourist and immigration travel.
The countries facing a full ban include:
•Afghanistan
•Burma (Myanmar)
•Chad
•Republic of the Congo
•Equatorial Guinea
•Eritrea
•Haiti
•Iran
•Libya
•Somalia
•Sudan
•Yemen
In addition, seven other nations, including Cuba, Venezuela, and Turkmenistan, will face partial restrictions, mainly targeting specific visa types and heightened security checks.
Triggered by Recent Terror Incident
The move follows a fatal terror attack in Colorado, allegedly carried out by an Egyptian national who overstayed his visa. Though Egypt is not on the banned list, the incident is said to have fast-tracked the policy.
Exemptions and Reaction
The order makes exceptions for U.S. residents, those with valid visas issued before 9 June, and individuals deemed to serve U.S. national interests.
The decision has sparked widespread criticism, with rights groups accusing the administration of discrimination and fear-mongering. Supporters, however, say the ban is a “commonsense measure” to protect Americans.
Legal challenges are expected as advocacy groups prepare to contest the ban in court.
