On Saturday, 31 May 2025, Iraqi President Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid met with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani in Baghdad to discuss key national issues, including the ongoing financial disputes between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
The meeting reviewed the overall political and economic situation in the country, as well as the progress of government programmes. Both leaders stressed the importance of finding comprehensive and lasting solutions—within the framework of the Iraqi Constitution and applicable laws—to the financial obligations between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region, defined by the Constitution, the Federal Budget Law, and recent rulings by the Federal Supreme Court.
The two sides also underscored the urgent need to pass the long-awaited Oil and Gas Law, which is seen as a critical step toward resolving disputes over resource management and revenue sharing.
Additionally, the meeting highlighted the importance of national unity in promoting security and social stability across Iraq.
In preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections, the President and Prime Minister reaffirmed the necessity of holding fair and transparent elections as a cornerstone of Iraq’s democratic process.
They noted that the elections will serve as a reflection of the will of the Iraqi people and will play a key role in furthering development and reconstruction efforts across the country.
