The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) of Iraq announced on Tuesday, 13 May 2025, that it has extended the registration period for political parties, alliances, and individual lists wishing to participate in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for 11 November 2025.
Jumana al-Ghalai, spokesperson for the IHEC, confirmed to PUKMEDIA that the Board of Commissioners resolved to extend the registration deadline until 20 May 2025. This extension applies to alliances, parties, and individual lists representing both general and minority community seats.
According to Ghalai, more than 330 parties and political entities are currently registered with the IHEC, while five new alliances have been registered to date. She further noted that, as of Sunday, 11 May 2025, 70 political parties and alliances are in the process of formation, and 80 have expressed their intention to contest the upcoming elections. Voter registration updates have reached approximately one million.
The IHEC launched its voter card and biometric data renewal campaign on 24 March 2025, with the process set to continue until 23 May 2025. This initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure a transparent and inclusive electoral process in advance of Iraq’s parliamentary elections.
The previous parliamentary elections, held on 10 October 2021, resulted in the election of 329 members to Iraq’s fifth parliamentary session. Voter turnout at that time was recorded at 42.15 percent, with the new parliament convening for its first session on 9 January 2022.
