PUK VP Rafaat Abdullah's meeting with Australian Ambassador Glenn Miles.
Rafaat Abdullah, Vice-President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), received Glenn Miles, Australian Ambassador to Iraq, in Sulaymaniyah on Tuesday, 6 May 2025, according to a statement from the PUK Vice-President’s media office.
The press office stated that, at the start of the meeting in Sulaymaniyah, both sides discussed recent developments and tensions in the region and Iraq.
The PUK Vice-President commended the role of Australian diplomacy in Iraq and outlined the PUK’s perspective on political issues in both Kurdistan and Iraq to the Ambassador.
He emphasised the importance of stability and security in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the need to avoid regional challenges and complications, and stated: “Kurdistan will always be a factor for security and stability in the region.”
The formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) was also discussed. Vice-President Abdullah briefed the Australian Ambassador on the PUK’s efforts to form the tenth cabinet, saying: “We are making every effort to form a unified, service-oriented government before the Iraqi elections.”
The Australian Ambassador, in turn, expressed his country’s support for a unified and service-focused government in the Kurdistan Region.
Furthermore, the PUK Vice-President highlighted the development and strengthening of relations between the Kurdistan Region and Australia, calling for “further development of relations and bilateral cooperation on shared interests.”
Ambassador Miles reiterated Australia’s support for the Kurdistan Region and expressed hope that Kurdistan would continue to resolve its issues with Baghdad through dialogue and understanding. He said: “It is important to resolve the issues between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government on the basis of the constitution.”
Abdullah expressed support for the Ambassador’s remarks, affirming: “The PUK’s ongoing desire is to resolve the issues and for the Kurdistan Region to reach an agreement with the federal government.”
The Australian Ambassador also acknowledged the status of the Kurdistan Region, praised the significant progress in Sulaymaniyah, and conveyed Australia’s desire for cooperation and coordination. He welcomed the coexistence among different communities in the Kurdistan Region.
He further commended the significant and influential role of President Mam Jalal in the political landscape of Iraq and Kurdistan, describing President Mam Jalal as a wise leader who brought people together.
The final topic of the meeting was the Iraqi parliamentary elections scheduled for November this year. Both sides agreed that this democratic process would further advance the country’s political development.
