Over fifty Iraqi lawmakers collected signatures in the parliament to block the Syrian President from attending the Arab Summit scheduled to be held in Baghdad on 17 May 2025.
Fifty-eight members of the Iraqi Parliament have submitted a formal request to the Speaker of Parliament, urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iraqi government not to invite the Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to attend the upcoming Arab Summit, scheduled to be held in Baghdad on 17 May 2025.
According to a letter submitted by MP Dr. Yousef Al-Kalabi and signed by 58 members of Parliament, the request to exclude the Syrian President from the upcoming Arab Summit in Baghdad is based on what the signatories describe as "his criminal history in Iraq" and is made "in loyalty to the blood of the martyrs and victims."
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed that Arab countries have confirmed that the Arab Summit will be held in Baghdad on 17 May.
He added that the summit will witness broad participation from Arab kings and presidents, noting that Iraq is working to create all appropriate conditions to ensure its success, reflecting a positive image of the country and strengthening the path of joint Arab action.
