Japan has allocated $700,000 to the Sulaymaniyah Museum, following the efforts of a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) faction in the Iraqi Parliament.
Dr. Bryar Rashid, a member of the Iraqi parliament from the PUK faction, informed PUKMEDIA that the Japanese Ambassador to Iraq and the Iraqi Foreign Minister signed an agreement on 25th March 2025 to allocate $700,000 (approximately one billion Iraqi dinars) for the Sulaymaniyah Museum.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Japanese Embassy, JICA, and all those who have supported the agreement I have been working towards for a long time as a member of the Iraqi parliament,” Dr. Rashid said.
The Sulaymaniyah Museum is an archaeological museum situated in the heart of Sulaymaniyah. It is regarded as the second largest museum in Iraq, following the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad, in terms of its collection. The museum is home to a vast array of artefacts spanning from prehistoric times to the late Islamic period and the Ottoman era. It was officially opened on 14th July 1961, originally occupying a small building. In 1980, the museum was relocated to a larger building on Salim Street in Sulaymaniyah, which has recently undergone renovation by UNESCO.
