Qubad Talabani: Capacity-Building Programmes Will Strengthen Kurdistan-China Relations

Qubad Talabani and Liu Jun meet in Erbil.
Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, welcomed Liu Jun, the Chinese Consul General to the Kurdistan Region, to discuss the strengthening of bilateral relations and various matters of mutual interest.
The meeting took place today, Wednesday (12 March 2025), in Erbil, where they addressed the situation in Syria and the recent agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Syrian Interim Government. Deputy PM Talabani described the agreement as a significant step towards stability and safeguarding the rights of Kurds and other communities in Syria. He expressed his hope that it would pave the way for resolving disputes between Syrian factions through dialogue and mutual understanding.
Another key topic of discussion was the development process, particularly regional development within the Kurdistan Region. The Deputy PM stressed the importance of achieving balanced development that encompasses all cities and regions across Kurdistan in various sectors. He also called on China, given its extensive expertise in this field, to support the Kurdistan Region’s development efforts.
During the meeting, the Chinese CG highlighted “capacity development in the Kurdistan Region,” announcing that “more than 500 citizens from the Region have benefited from Chinese-sponsored capacity-building programmes.” He affirmed that “training courses in this area will continue in the future.”
Qubad Talabani, in turn, expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government and the Chinese CG for their support” and emphasised that “ongoing capacity-building programmes will play a positive role in strengthening ties between the Kurdistan Region and China.”
Additionally, both sides explored ways to enhance water resource management in the Kurdistan Region, underlining “the necessity of joint cooperation and drawing on China’s experience in this sector.”
