The joint committee of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) is scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, to develop a draft proposal for the formation of the future Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The head of the PUK's side in the joint committee stated that the points of agreement are more that the points of disagreement between the two sides.
Rewaz Fayeq, a member of the PUK Political Bureau and head of the PUK's Technical Committee, told the media that the PUK-KDP joint committee will meet for the fifth time in Erbil today to create a draft proposal for the formation of the Kurdistan Region's future government.
She added: "We have completed most of our tasks as the management strategy drafting committee and the points we have agreed on are more than the points we have not agreed on, but we have differences of opinion and vision."
"Additionally, we disagree on the mechanisms we intend to employ to carry out the process," she noted.
In addition, Fayeq said: "I hope the Senior Negotiating Committee can reach a consensus on the issues we were unable to resolve today."
PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire told PUKMEDIA that meetings between the PUK and KDP committees to form the next government are still ongoing as they are addressing technical issues such as responsibilities, the way and policies of working together, and issues that the KRG's new cabinet must prioritise.
"After the completion of that task, then the distribution of positions will be discussed, as there have been no discussions on the position between the PUK and KDP so far," he said.
PUK Spokesperson Saadi Ahmed Pire previously told a press conference that there has been no debate between the PUK and the KDP and that what is claimed concerning the distribution of positions is propaganda; "the PUK does not want any positions unless there is agreement on the government's programme."
He also pointed out: "We've encountered troubles in the past. If we do not solve these problems, they will reoccur in the future."
"Therefore, the PUK emphasises that we are not finding positions for people, but rather finding people for positions, and that once the positions are determined, we will assign the right individuals to the right positions," he added.
The PUK-KDP joint committee has previously met 4 times to create a draft proposal for the formation of the new KRG.
Kurdistan parliamentary elections were held in October of last year, and the Kurdistan Region is currently awaiting the formation of its new cabinet.
It is anticipated that the two victorious parties, the PUK and the KDP, will come to an agreement to form the next government because a number of parties have already stated that they will function as opposition parties in the parliament.
