On Thursday, 23 January 2025, Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, met with Tobias Lindner, Minister of State and Special Coordinator of the German Foreign Ministry for Syria, to discuss matters of mutual interest.
During the meeting, Qubad Talabani expressed gratitude to the German government for its support to the Kurdistan Region, expressing hope for strengthened relations across various sectors, particularly agriculture, business, and reforms within the Peshmerga forces.
A key topic of discussion was the efforts to form the new cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Qubad Talabani explained that ongoing meetings between political parties, especially the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), are underway and expressed optimism about achieving results soon. He emphasised that the PUK seeks to establish the next government on the principle of genuine partnership, as he believes only a truly unified and effective government can meet the aspirations of the Kurdish people and address key challenges.
Another focus of their discussions was the reform process within the Peshmerga forces. Qubad Talabani reiterated their commitment to ensuring that reforms are implemented in cooperation with Global Coalition forces. He stressed that these efforts require a strong, unified government where trust prevails among all participating parties.
The two also addressed the situation in Syria and the broader stability of the surrounding region. Both sides expressed their hope for Syrian parties to resolve their differences through dialogue, underlining the importance of including all communities of the country, particularly the Kurdish community, in shaping a new political system. They stressed that the Kurdish community should play a central role in the future Syrian administration.
