Some families in the Kurdish neighbourhoods of Kirkuk Province are facing issues with the census teams, as only one family is being registered in homes that contain multiple families. A member of the Kirkuk Provincial Council has confirmed that this practice is illegal and cannot be tolerated.
Dr. Ahmed Fatih, a member of the Kirkuk Provincial Council representing the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) bloc, told PUKMEDIA: "We have received complaints from several citizens regarding the census teams in Kirkuk, particularly in the Kurdish neighbourhoods, where only one family is being registered in houses that contain more than one family. This is entirely against the law, and we will not permit it."
Dr. Fatih further urged the people of Kirkuk to report any similar violations so that corrective action can be taken and the census process is conducted lawfully and correctly. "We will not turn a blind eye to any violations," he added.
He further stated, "We have already forwarded all complaints to the Director of Statistics in Kirkuk. According to the law, census teams can register up to 26 families in a single building, so it is important that we are informed of any violations or issues, so we can address them promptly."
The 2024 General Population and Housing Census is Iraq’s first census since 1997. Scheduled for November 20 and 21, over 120,000 enumerators will be involved in the process, asking more than 70 questions to each family across all regions of Iraq.
