The University of Sulaymaniyah has been ranked as the top university in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq in the World University Rankings published by the British Times Higher Education Foundation.
In the 2024 rankings, twenty-one Iraqi universities met the criteria set by the British institution, allowing them to be included in the classification. In contrast, the remaining 58 universities that participated were unable to qualify and were instead classified as "Reporter," indicating they did not meet the necessary standards.
The criteria used by the institution for this classification include: the educational environment, the ratio of doctoral students to bachelor's students, the proportion of professors with doctoral degrees, university revenues, the student-to-faculty ratio, teaching reputation, the number of researchers and their recognition, the volume of research output, research reputation, research impact, citation impact, research quality, and various other factors.
Dr. Kosar Mohammed Ali, the President of the University of Sulaymaniyah noted that, according to the World University Rankings, the university ranked between 2800 and 2900 globally. However, its standing has improved to between 1000 and 1200, marking a significant achievement for both the university and the Kurdistan Region.
Although this was the University of Sulaymaniyah's first participation in the rankings, it secured the top position among all universities in Iraq. The university's leadership attributed this success to the collective efforts of its professors and students, as well as to the city of Sulaymaniyah and the wider Kurdistan Region.
The British Times Higher Education, Shanghai University, and Quacquarelli Symonds are among the leading organisations that publish university rankings, which are regarded as some of the most important and comprehensive assessments, based on various criteria to determine university standings.
