PUK President's meeting with US CG
Bafel Jalal Talabani, the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met Steven Bitner, the newly appointed US Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, at the Political Bureau headquarters in Erbil.
Present at the meeting were Darbaz Kosrat Rasul, Rewaz Fayaq, members of the Political Bureau, Saadi Ahmed Pire, Spokesman of the PUK, and Mark Stroh, former US Consul General. The two sides engaged in a discussion regarding the current state of affairs in the Kurdistan Region, specifically focussing on elections and the energy sector, and emphasised the importance of enhanced collaboration between both sides, with the aim of safeguarding higher interests.
President Bafel Jalal Talabani praised Stroh for his previous contributions to the Kurdistan Region at the beginning of the meeting. He also congratulated Bitner on his appointment and reiterated the PUK's support for the success of his works.
President Bafel discussed the Kurdistan parliamentary elections during the meeting and emphasised that conducting fair elections as planned will lead the Kurdistan Region to a more advanced state. He highlighted the necessity for a change in the current scenario and stated that the elections offer the most effective means to achieve improved governance.
"We strongly reject any attempt to prolong the process and we firmly refuse to put the future of our Region at risk," he declared.
The energy sector was also discussed during the meeting, with President Bafel highlighting that the rich resources in the Kurdistan Region has not been effectively utilised to enhance the well-being of its citizens. He said: "Our endeavours aim to restore the entitlements of our people and utilise the country's resources for the betterment of public welfare, steering our Region towards prosperity."
