Fahmi Burhan, the head of the Kurdistani regions outside the administration of the Kurdistan Region.
Fahmi Burhan, head of the General Board for Kurdistani Areas Outside the Region, emphasised the importance of acknowledging the merits and entitlements achieved through the elections in Kirkuk. He called for an end to the practice of self-imposition and neglecting communities, while also highlighting the need to consider the perspectives of other parties.
Burhan said: "The present moment presents an opportunity to demonstrate a transformed society where discrimination and offensive language are no longer tolerated. The beginning of dialogue between the Kurds on one hand and Kurds with the Turkmen and Arab communities on the other marks the first step towards eradicating the problem of self-imposition and neglecting other communities."
He added: The future steps should be based on development, brotherhood, and coexistence, without marginalising any community, as was done against the Kurds after 2017. The merits and entitlement obtained in elections should not be neglected when it comes to Kirkuk. Hence, in contrast to limited partisan mindset, congratulations to the people of Kirkuk. We anticipate that Mr. Rebwar Taha will serve as a governor for every person, and we expect widespread support for him."
Rebwar Taha, the leader of the Kirkuk is Our Strength & Will Coalition and member of the PUK's Leadership Council, has been chosen as the governor of Kirkuk on the share of the Kurdish community.
The Iraqi provincial council elections were held on December 18, 2023. The Kirkuk is Our Strength & Will Coalition, formed by the alliance between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Communist Party, emerged as the leading political force in Kirkuk. It secured the highest number of votes in the province, with a total of 157,639 votes, accounting for 43% of the votes. Additionally, the coalition won 5 seats, establishing its dominance across all communities in the province.
