In a span of five days, over 1,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who were residing in Erbil camps have successfully returned to their original homes in Nineveh province. This includes a specific count of 518 individuals who were previously residing in Khazir camp.
In a statement, the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement reported that on Monday, August 5, 2024, 518 IDPs from Khazir camp and 521 other IDPs from Hassan Sham camp in Erbil had returned to their homes in Nineveh.
The IDPs have successfully repatriated to their residences under the guidance of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the Nineveh Operations Command. This initiative is part of the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement's strategy to resolve the issue of IDPs in the country.
The Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement has formulated a comprehensive strategy to resolve the problem of IDPs. All IDPs in the Kurdistan Region are required to repatriate to their original residences. To encourage their return, the government will offer various incentives, including the reconstruction of their areas and covering the expenses associated with their return. Additionally, each family will receive a sum of 4 million Iraqi dinars along with several other services.
