Abdulbasit Khalid, the chairman of the Turkmen Political Council in Erbil.
The Asayish (Security) of Erbil summoned an independent Turkmen candidate, and the candidate expressed the anticipation of being apprehended on multiple grounds, with the intention of disqualifying him from participating in the election.
Abdulbasit Khalid, an independent Turkmen candidate running in the Kurdistan parliamentary elections in Erbil, said at a press conference on Saturday, June 22, 2024, that he had been called in twice by Erbil security forces. He believes the summonses were related to his candidature as an independent Turkmen candidate in Erbil, but they were actually issued for unrelated reasons.
"Erbil Security bears the responsibility for safeguarding my life, as well as the lives of my family and children," Khalid said while imploring all parties to intervene and prevent the security forces in Erbil from incarcerating him on numerous pretexts.
Khalid previously told PUKMEDIA that he had publicly taken a stance on the Turkmen members of the Kurdistan Parliament and had encouraged the minority communities to vote for their genuine representatives in the Kurdistan Parliament, stating that he has currently nominated himself as the authentic representative for the Turkmen community in Erbil.
He stated that he believes he was summoned by security due to his political beliefs.
Abdulbasit Khalid, the chairman of the Turkmen Political Council in Erbil, has previously held numerous press conferences to denounce the self-proclaimed Turkmen representatives in the Kurdistan Parliament. He has urged the minorities, particularly the Turkmen community, to vote for legitimate representatives who truly represent their interests.
