PUK Appeals Judicial Board for Elections' Decision

The Legal Affairs Centre of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has filed an appeal against the decision of the Judicial Board for Elections, requesting that the Halabja constituency be allowed to have a quota seat for minority groups.

Talar Latif, the head of the PUK's Legal Affairs Centre, informed PUKMEDIA that they had filed an appeal against the Judicial Board for Elections' decision to allocate quota seats in the Kurdistan Parliament. She stated that the ruling contains illegal aspects.

The Judicial Board for Elections has determined that out of the 100 members in Parliament, five seats have been designated for minority groups. These seats were distributed among the three constituencies of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok. Unfortunately, the Halabja constituency has been deprived of it, and we strongly urge that the quota seat be allocated to that constituency as well.

"Our objective is to ensure that minorities in the Kurdistan parliament have their own representatives who will advocate for their rights. The PUK is committed to supporting them in this endeavour." 

On May 21, 2024, the Judicial Board for Elections made the decision to assign five seats, out of the total 100 seats in the Kurdistan Parliament, specifically to minority groups. These seats are distributed among three constituencies: Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok. However, it is important to note that the Halabja constituency is not included in this allocation. The PUK has lodged an appeal in the Federal Court, requesting the determination of the quota seat for Halabjaprovince.

President Mam Jalal introduced quota seats for minorities in the Kurdistan Parliament. The PUK has consistently viewed the parliament as a platform to advocate for the rights of minority groups. In pursuit of this objective, he has made efforts to provide authentic parliamentary representation for minority groups.
