Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani.
The Iraqi Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani, directed authorities to form an investigation committee to look into the attack on the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah. He warned the perpetrators that they will face punishments for this act.
The Joint Operations Command of Iraq stated on Friday, January 26, 2024, that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces ordered a probe to be carried out to determine the details of the attack on Khor Mor gas field within a 48-hour timeframe.
Sudani instructed authorities to take strict legal action against the entity responsible for this criminal activity, which endangers energy projects in Iraq's Kurdistan Region and neighbouring provinces.
He stated that the intentional acts of sabotage were intended to undermine the Iraqi economy and that the responsible group would face fair punishment.
Alina Romanowski, Ambassador of the United States (US) to Iraq, Stephen Hitchen, British Ambassador to Iraq, and the French Embassy in Iraq condemned the attack that resulted in a 2,800-megawatt drop in power production, causing major power outages throughout the Kurdistan Region.
No group has claimed responsibility for the overnight explosion that hit Iraq's largest gas field, Khor Mor.
According to Dana Gas, the field's operator based in the UAE, it damaged a liquid gas storage tank but did not injure anyone. Dana Gas stated that production was temporarily suspended to put out a fire, which was extinguished, and that operations would resume soon.
