Iraqi Supreme Court.
To preserve the public interest and for the safety of all, the Iraqi Supreme Court suspended the handover of the headquarters of the Kirkuk Operations Command to the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
The KDP exploited the protests for political purposes
Saadi Ahmed Pire, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Political Bureau, said that the people who supervised the demonstrations in Kirkuk live in Erbil.
According to the statement of the Federal Supreme Court, yesterday's clashes in Kirkuk were caused by a KDP headquarters. Aso Mamand, an executive of the Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), commented on the recent events in Kirkuk, stating, "These problems are occurring at a bad time, and we condemn these tensions," and that a headquarters is not worth tensions between Kurds and Arabs.
Kirkuk Arabs blocked the Kirkuk-Erbil road
On August 25, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, ordered the Joint Operations Command in Kirkuk to vacate its headquarters and hand it over to the KDP because, before October 16, 2017 and the consequences of the referendum, the building was the headquarters of the KDP.
After the decision, the Arabs of Kirkuk began to protest and blocked the Kirkuk-Erbil road as a protest against the return of the KDP to Kirkuk. Yesterday, a number of Kurdish citizens held demonstrations against the road blockade, and four Kurdish citizens were killed and 15 others wounded in clashes between the two sides.
