A Kurdish woman who is multilingual and formerly held the position of US ambassador to Bulgaria for four years has been named by US President Joe Biden as his preferred candidate.
The White House released a statement which stated that President Joe Biden intended to nominate Herro Mustafa Garg for the position of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
Garg previously served as the US ambassador to Bulgaria and held a number of high-level diplomatic roles in Lebanon, Greece, Portugal, India, and Iraq.
The presidential candidate speaks Kurdish, Arabic, Persian, Greek, Hindi, Bulgarian, Portuguese, and Spanish and has been awarded the Matilda W. Sinclaire Award for superior achievement in a foreign language.
Garg was born in Erbil, Kurdistan in 1975. When her family migrated to the US in 1976, she was just a year old. She was recognized by the Carnegie Corporation as one of the Great Immigrants of America in 2021, and the documentary film American Herro is based on her family history. She received her bachelor's degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and her master's degree from Princeton University.
Prior to Herro Mustafa becoming the US ambassador to Egypt, the US Senate must confirm the president's choice for the position.
Former US president Donald Trump nominated Herro Mustafa to be the country's ambassador to Bulgaria, where she served from October 2019 until March 2023. Joe Biden has now put her forward for the ambassadorial position once more.
