Kenya has recorded its first confirmed case of Ebola after a Kenyan citizen who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo arrived in Nairobi on Saturday, Health Minister Aden Duale said.

The patient has since died, while 28 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, have so far been identified, Duale told a press conference.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is battling its largest-ever Ebola outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus.

The outbreak was declared in mid-May, although it may have begun several months earlier. Efforts to contain it have so far proved unsuccessful, with the Central African country recording more than 8,000 cases and over 4,000 deaths.

The outbreak previously spread to Uganda, which reported 20 cases and two deaths. The World Health Organisation declared Uganda free of Ebola in August.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, whether living or deceased. It can cause fever, vomiting and diarrhoea and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.
