The Iraqi Line is preparing to resume commercial maritime operations in the Gulf region after more than half a century.

In a statement, the Ministry of Transport announced that the Iraqi Line’s inaugural voyage is scheduled to depart from Jebel Ali Port in the United Arab Emirates on 15 October, bound for Umm Qasr Port in Iraq.

The move marks the return of Iraq’s national maritime carrier to regional trade routes and provides a national option for transporting containers and other cargo.

The ministry said the resumption of the Iraqi Line’s operations aims to boost cargo movement through Iraqi ports, support trade with regional countries and strengthen the national carrier’s presence on regional maritime routes.

The initiative is part of the Ministry of Transport’s strategy to develop Iraq’s transport system across various modes while enhancing operational capabilities.

The last voyages by Iraqi cargo ships in the region date back to the mid-1960s, making the resumption of the Iraqi Line a significant milestone in efforts to reactivate national carriers and develop Iraq’s maritime transport sector.
